“Cameras don’t save lives or prevent drowning, lifeguards do.” We hear this a lot in areas were beach safety cameras are a new concept.  After working with lifeguards in multiple countries we agree. PWCs and boats don’t pull people from the water, lifeguards do.  We believe the vessel is just a valuable tool.

We started our efforts at CoastalCOMS with a goal to make our smart camera systems and risk assessment tools the software/IT equivalent of the PWC for lifeguarding:  a valuable tool to assist in drowning or injury prevention.

Components of beach risk we can detect from video include:

  • Wave Height and Period Identification live from video, so you can be aware of changing wave conditions throughout your area of operation in a single hazard dashboard – in real time.
  • People Counting to understand when the bus drops 100’s of tourists on your beach, and pattern tourism/visit rates for better resource allocation and budgeting over time.
  • Shoreline Tracking that allows planning based on the changing morphology of your beach.
  • Mobile Incident Reporting gather information as it happens, and match it against video for a more automated and detailed analysis of activites.
  • Hazard and Risk Software that allows you to feed the information above into a system to produce reporting for partner agencies interested in long term trend analysis and safety program management and messaging.
