Award-winning CoastalCOMS makes waves

Perhaps, then, it’s no surprise that many Gold Coast-based technologies are inspired by the surf. Award-winning Gold Coast company CoastalCOMS is one such innovator.

An offshoot of Coastalwatch, the team behind a successful surf monitoring website and app, CoastalCOMS have gone from strength to strength since their establishment in 2007, picking up an honour at the recent Queensland Local Government Managers Awards.

Like many startups, Coastalwatch began as a solution to its founder’s problem. Founder Chris Lane, then a busy PhD student in artificial intelligence and kinesiology, was looking for a simpler way to check on the surf at Burleigh Heads. He turned to using a surf cam.

Naomi Edwards, Business Development Manager at CoastalCOMS, was clearly inspired by his initiative. “This was in 1998 and if you can imagine the cost of cameras and challenge of streaming on a dial-up connection it is incredible that he was able to make it happen,” she said. “Chris has always been passionate about connecting computer science to communications to make life easier for people.”

Of course, the concept was new to its audience, too. Chris and his team were naturally uncertain about how the surf cam would be received, but they didn’t need to wait too long for the result.

Locals responded well.
